Everyone was leaving Denali for the weekend, so I headed out too. I drove the state truck, nicknamed the grant mobile, because they fund it with grant money down to Nancy Lake. Angela was kind enough to let me stay with her for the weekend. The ride was about an hour and a half of pure bliss. Just me the mountains and the road ahead. I arrived pretty late and found the others cleaning fresh picked fiddleheads. I was surprised to find out there was fiddleheads here; we boiled and then sautéed them. A good ole Alaskan late night snack.
Saturday morning we slept in and took our time getting ready for the day. We decided to canoe South Rolly lake, which was beautiful because there are no motorized boats allowed! We saw two loons and heard many other birds. The canoe ride tuckered me out and I took a nice nap. Then at the lack of groceries we fried up some spam, boy that was salty. Angela went hiking with Maxine, one of the backcountry rangers, who also took her grocery shopping so our breakfast was much tastier.
Today we were feeling ambitious an decided to hike the Red Shirt lake trail, but that wasn't the tough part. We also decided to ride our bikes to the trail. It was a five mile bike there, three mile hike in, three mile hike out and five mile bike back. It was a nice hike and the end point on the lake was beautiful, we took a little catnap on the shore before heading back out. The bike back was pretty rough and I'm in for a good nights sleep.
We ventured our way down to wasilla for a shopping adventure. The wasn't bad and I didn't spend nearly as much as anticipated. That could either be because I didn't buy the expensive things or because things aren't really that much more. Either way I feel like I won't be hungry anymore! It was pretty late and we hadn't had dinner yet so I resorted to Scrubway, ew! But it was buff chix so it was better than nothing. We are now having a campfire and my first s'mores of the season, with a little taste of Alaskan Summer brew (shhhh).
Cheers to summer!
More pictures of hike will be posted when I have web access from my laptop!
